Breed Health Concerns

Breed Health Concerns

These health concerns have been identified in the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (Swissy). It is important to understand there is the potential for these conditions or problems to develop in any Swissy, regardless of the line, pedigree or breeder. Please keep in mind that all purebred and mixed breed dogs can have health concerns, including show dogs, working dogs and family companions.

Health Information Database

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) – This database offers an outstanding resource for breeders and puppy buyers who are researching the health test results of Swissies. This is the most accurate and up-to-date source of official health test results including hips, elbows, shoulders, patellas, cardiac, and thyroid along with CERF test results and CHIC numbers for all breeds and includes numerous articles discussing orthopedic diseases that affect dogs. The “Search OFA Records” feature of the database allows both general and detailed searches by breed, dog’s full or partial name, gender, registration number, time period, specific test(s), and test results. Individual dog records automatically link to sire, dam, full sibling and 1/2 sibling test results and also link to a pedigree. Owners of dogs have the option to submit non-OFA test results, including but not limited to PennHip tests.

Breed Health Survey

To determine the on-going health status of Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs the GSMDCA periodically conducts a comprehensive health survey.

2008 – 2012 Breed Health Survey – This on-line survey is open for submission of information for all Swissies who were living at any time during the years of 2008 to 2012. Real time statistical results from the Surveys completed to date are also available for viewing.
