Drafting ResourcesFor those going it alone, the "bible" of drafting most definitely is Consie Powell's Newfoundland Draft Work – A Guide for Training. A careful reading and faithful application of its lessons will result in a well-trained drafting Swissy. It is obtainable from several sources, including Wilczek Woodworks and Dog Works.Another excellent reference is the VHS Video: An Introduction to Canine Carting with Beth Ostrander. It is also available from the above sources. The Cascade Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club publishes a very good Draft Work Reference book. The independent e-mail discussion list "Carting-L" is an excellent place to post questions and meet folks who are willing to share their love of the sport. As for purchasing equipment, harnesses, carts and wagons come in a vast array of styles and types and what is the best choice for you depends on your draft work goals. For example, if you are interested in training for competition, a 2-wheeled cart is more appropriate. It is lighter and more maneuverable. If you are more interested in hauling heavier loads, such as working around your property or pulling small children in parades, a 4-wheeled wagon might be more appropriate. Most of the vendors below will attempt to determine your goals before selling you anything. For those wishing to make their own carts, links to some carting plans are also provided. Please note: This list is an informal compilation of drafting resources and inclusion does not indicate any sort of official endorsement by the GSMDCA. Changes, additions and deletions should be sent to the GSMDCA Draft Chair. Drafting equipment can be obtained from:
